“Get Scrappy, Bro” Ric Hoke, WAVS Custom, talks storytelling and scrappiness

There were some memorable moments at the 2023 NEXT Venture Summit that were more memorable than others. If you were in the room, you would definitely remember Ric Hoke, Founder of WAVS Custom, walking on stage with his guitar and a song. To follow up his incredible performance, he then tossed WAVS t-shirts to the crowd. A stand-out for many reasons, WAVS was one of the 10 Most Exciting Startups in the Region featured at the yearly event. And his presentation proved why.

WAVS Custom creates handmade, custom-fit earphones right here in Greenville, SC. Musicians are big fans of WAVS’ patented mobile 3D scanning technology and music provided a unique and fun way to showcase his product on stage.

Music actually led to Ric’s “lightbulb moment” prompting him to create his patented technology and product. Ric was part of the NEXT Accelerator cohort 1 so NEXT had a front-row seat as he built his pitch. When we asked Ric what it was that “clicked” for him when it comes to pitching on stage his immediate reply was: “[Founders] have to be comfortable telling the truth of their story. Don’t avoid the hard stuff, the struggles, or the emotional.” It’s hard to get feedback especially when your business is so personal. It’s easy to be self-protective but it’s best to lean into the emotional connection.

Lightbulb moments that come full circle

wavs custom, music, guitars, ear pieces for musiciansRic’s story starts with his grandparents, both of whom had dementia. Experiencing that with his family deeply impacted Ric from a young age. A lifelong music lover and musician he tried to pair that love with serving those impacted by this disease in multiple ways but it wasn’t until he was serving Alzheimer’s patients through music therapy that he had what he calls his “lightbulb moment.” Ric openly features Dave, an Alzheimer’s patient, as part of his story – he’s integral even if there isn’t a happy ending. Ric was only able to connect with Dave through music. And it was difficult when the earbuds were constantly falling out of Dave’s ears! BAM! Lightbulb. Unfortunately, Dave passed away before Ric was able to make him his very own custom-made WAVS but Ric was able to honor him by playing at his funeral.

What an incredibly powerful story. Maybe it is sad, and part of it – talking about disease and hardship and dying – can be uncomfortable but Ric truly believes you have to embrace the heart of your story to make true impact. Dave, and his grandparents, are what drive Ric day in and day out to stay in the grind that is building a company.

“If your heart’s not in it, you’re not going to succeed. People without heart aren’t going to have the energy and they’re not going to believe strongly in what they’re doing. The only way through it is by focusing our energy on what makes us happy and what helps someone else. Any of the companies that have made it and sustained, they have solved a problem that truly helped someone’s pain. Those are the companies that stick around.” We think WAVS is going to stick around.

Providing accelerant and mentorship

Ric Hoke, WAVS CustomRic found the NEXT Accelerator to be incredibly helpful and perfectly timed for where his company was in early 2023. They were trying to raise money and just received an SCRA grant. WAVS was ripe to scale and Ric focused in. “Every one of the speakers – they were at the top of their level and they know what we’re going through because they’ve been in that situation. You’re only going to get what you put into it [the Accelerator]. You have got to reach out and talk to the speakers and the organizers. Reach out to the resources that are available to you.”

We asked Ric for his best advice for early-stage founders: “Get scrappy, bro! Especially if you’re trying to raise a family. Ideas typically come later in life when you’re educated and connecting the dots so you often have a family to support. Learn how to utilize every resource that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg. Learn how to build it yourself first so you understand the cost. Don’t overpay for something you can watch YouTube to figure out. There are more resources than ever to be scrappy to get to the funding round.”

WAVS just closed its first round of funding and SCRA’s investment affiliate, SC Launch Inc., just announced an investment in WAVS Custom. Looks like being scrappy has paid off.

SCRA Supports Scalable Tech Startups Statewide

NEXT Startup Success Program Manager, Peter Micali, highlights the key takeaways from the 2023 SCRA Summit, a state-wide event for scalable startups hosted in Columbia, SC.

While the NEXT staff loves and calls Greenville home, the entire state of South Carolina is committed to supporting tech-enabled, scalable startups. One of the best representations of this support is the South Carolina Research Authority (SCRA), a state-chartered organization charged with fueling South Carolina’s innovation economy by accelerating technology-enabled growth of academia, entrepreneurship and industry.

For nearly 40 years, SCRA has been an instrumental part of the state’s startup ecosystem, providing grand funding, supporting academic research and local entrepreneurial organizations like NEXT.

I had a blast attending SCRA’s 2023 Summit (road trip!), which had the excellent theme of “Founders First.” Truly a celebration of founders and their impact on the growth of South Carolina’s innovation economy, this year’s summit featured great keynote speakers, fireside chats and of course: founders, founders, founders!

In addition to the wonderful keynote presentation by Joseph Hanna (Chief Product Officer of Magnit Global and Founder/CEO of ENGAGE Talent), the day was thematically structured around the different stages of a startup’s growth journey: Ideation, Development, Accelerate, Scale and Funding. Featuring fireside chats between SCRA moderators and SCRA member companies (startups) from all over the state, this format provided an excellent educational opportunity for the audience, which featured more entrepreneurs than past Summits.

It was invaluable to see the myriad challenges, opportunities, and evolving strategies for startups, and how those change during the lifecycle of a venture.

Education is an important area of focus for NEXT, and it was inspiring to see a statewide organization provide the platform and educational opportunity. Plus, as an added bonus, the Upstate was strongly represented through multiple Greenville-based ventures featured on stage. Incora HealthScopestack and 6AM City were represented in the Ideate, Scale and Fundraising sessions respectively.

In the interest of amplifying that education, we had a couple of key takeaways for founders:

  • Collaboration between support organizations and communities is vital and leads to greater impact
  • SCRA investments and support have led to a $1.5-billion-dollar impact on the state, and have led to the creation of over 5,300 jobs (with an average salary of over $80,000)
  • For founders: metrics, data and deep knowledge of your company’s performance are crucial, particularly when fundraising
  • When building software products, one approach is to start small with essential, well-executed features at launch, then adding customer-requested features from there
  • There are loads of support opportunities for startups from all industries: while SCRA and NEXT skew towards tech/tech-enabled ventures, many other South Carolina ESOs and national programs support startups of all types.

Make sure you check out the following:

A huge thank you and congratulations to the entire SCRA team on a job well done. The NEXT team is excited about the trajectory and momentum of our state’s innovation economy and SCRA is a huge part of that. Finally, if you’re part of a scaling startup located in the Greenville area, please don’t hesitate to reach out to our team to see how you can get connected to our growing ecosystem.

NEXT Venture Pitch 2021 Sets Record

More Venture Capital Firms in Greenville for the Sixth Annual Signature Event

Three Judges Selections Awarded from 100 Applicants

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE- September 17, 2021 (Greenville, SC)Over 20 VCs representing world-class funds from across the country gathered yesterday to judge our top eight finalists and select their choice to take the stage at next month’s Venture Atlanta. The event was the culmination of a months-long effort narrowing down 100 applicants from all over the Carolinas to just one startup to represent the Upstate at one of the Southeast’s most prestigious events.

Anduin, an AI solution proven to speed up billing and cash flow for accounting firms, took home the coveted Judges’ Choice and is delighted to pitch at Venture Atlanta. “I’m grateful for the opportunity and want to thank NEXT Upstate for giving our Anduin A-Team this award. Justin Adams, founder and CEO of Anduin. We work hard and know we are onto something big. Having the opportunity to get in front of an audience like this is important for us. Thank you!”

The three Judges’ Selections were:

From left: Tyler Traudt, CEO of Debtbook; Ryan Johnston and Ryan Heafy, Co-founders of 6AM City; Bob Quinn, Executive Director of SCRA; Shontavia Johnson, Associate Vice President for Entrepreneurship and Innovation; Carlos Phillips, President of Greenville Chamber; Justin Adams, Founder of Anduin; Paige McPheely, CEO/Founder of Base.

A sold-out Greenville One Center saw all eight founders think on their feet as they fielded tough, pointed questions from some of the top minds in venture investing and entrepreneurship. The event was highlighted by “profiles in entrepreneurship” – three fireside chats offering often candid glimpses inside the success stories of founders, investors and the winding road it takes to get to the top.

An interesting twist this year brought seven VC firms from the West Coast to evaluate two startups remotely. This hybrid model brought the attention of firms like Kleiner Perkins, GV (Google Ventures) and Intel Capital whose eyes were opened to the potential of Greenville.

“The NEXT team put on a great program. Really punched above its weight with this showcase of the Greenville region and the high-growth companies that are coming out of here,” said Don Rainey, General Partner of Grotech Ventures. “There’s no doubt in my mind we’re just scratching the surface and I can’t wait to watch this takeoff.”

NEXT Venture Pitch would not be possible without the support of sponsors like Clemson University, SCRA, Kopis, Elliott Davis, the Greenville Area Development Corporation, the Greenville Local Development Corporation, Hughes Development, JP Morgan Chase and Knoll Ventures. NEXT Venture Pitch will be back in 2022, exact dates to be determined.
